Behind the Shot: Photographing Westminster Abbey

I’ve had the privilege of photographing several events at Westminster Abbey over the past couple of years, but I was particularly delighted to be invited to contribute to the 2025 Abbey Review publication.
The brief was to capture portraits of individuals carrying out some of the Abbey’s more unique and lesser-seen roles. We began with Vanessa, the Head Conservator, as she worked meticulously on the Shrine of Edward the Confessor. From there, we headed up onto the roof to follow Len from the Works Department, documenting his inspection of the vast, intricate maze of rooftops.
After descending, we made our way to the Triforium, an area rarely seen by visitors, where we photographed technicians from the Royal College of Music as they produced a live broadcast of an Evensong service replicationg a photograph taken of the BBC broadcasting the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Following a long, winding descent down a narrow staircase, we returned to ground level and passed through an unassuming door into the Infirmary. Here, the Guild of St Faith volunteers carefully repair and maintain the garments and fabrics used throughout the Abbey.
It’s remarkable to witness the sheer number of people—and the variety of roles—involved in sustaining Westminster Abbey, a church with over a thousand years of history, along with the traditions that have developed over time.
The brief for the 2026 edition has already been set, and I’m looking forward to working on it throughout the coming year.
